Co-codamol
Also known as: Solpadol, Kapake, Tylex
What it's for
Co-codamol is a painkiller that combines paracetamol and codeine. It treats moderate pain when paracetamol alone has not worked. It is stronger than paracetamol on its own.
Comes as: Tablets, capsules, or soluble tablets
How to take it
- Adults: Take 1 or 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours when needed.
- Do not take more than 8 tablets in 24 hours.
- Do not use for more than 3 days without medical advice.
- Swallow whole with water. Soluble tablets dissolve in water.
Doses here are typical. Always follow the instructions from your prescriber or on the packet — they come first.
Common side effects
- Constipation (very common - drink plenty of water and eat fibre)
- Feeling sleepy or dizzy
- Feeling sick

Important safety points
- Do not take with other medicines containing paracetamol
- Can be addictive - only use for short periods
- Do not drink alcohol
- Do not drive or use machinery if you feel drowsy
- Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding without medical advice
Get medical help urgently if…
- You have taken more than the recommended dose
- You have difficulty breathing or shallow breathing
- You feel very drowsy or confused
- You notice your skin or eyes turning yellow
