Empagliflozin

Also known as: Jardiance

What it's for

Empagliflozin lowers blood sugar by removing sugar through your urine. It reduces the risk of heart problems and kidney disease in people with type 2 diabetes.

Comes as: Tablets

How to take it

  • Adults: Usually 10mg or 25mg once a day in the morning.
  • Take at the same time each day.
  • You can take it with or without food.
  • Stay well hydrated.

Doses here are typical. Always follow the instructions from your prescriber or on the packet — they come first.

Common side effects

  • Thrush (genital yeast infections)
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Needing to pass urine more often
  • Increased thirst

The leaflet inside the packet lists all known side effects.

Important safety points

  • Maintain good genital hygiene
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Can rarely cause diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Tell your doctor before surgery - you may need to stop temporarily

Get medical help urgently if…

  • You have nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, unusual tiredness (possible ketoacidosis)
  • You have severe symptoms of a urinary or genital infection
  • You are very dehydrated and passing little urine
  • You have difficulty breathing
