Eplerenone
Also known as: Inspra
What it's for
Eplerenone protects your heart after a heart attack and treats heart failure. It blocks a hormone called aldosterone. It works similarly to spironolactone but with fewer hormonal side effects.
Comes as: Tablets
How to take it
- Adults: Usually 25mg to 50mg once daily.
- Take at the same time each day.
- You can take it with or without food.
- Your doctor will monitor your potassium levels.
Doses here are typical. Always follow the instructions from your prescriber or on the packet — they come first.
Common side effects
- Dizziness
- Feeling sick or diarrhoea
- Tiredness
- High potassium (usually no symptoms)
The leaflet inside the packet lists all known side effects.
Important safety points
- Avoid potassium supplements and salt substitutes
- Your doctor will check your potassium levels regularly
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems
- Can interact with many medicines - check with your pharmacist
Get medical help urgently if…
- You have muscle weakness or an irregular heartbeat
- You have difficulty breathing
- You feel very unwell
- You have severe dizziness or fainting
