Hydrocortisone Cream
Also known as: HC45, Dermacort
What it's for
Hydrocortisone is a mild steroid cream for itchy, red, or inflamed skin. It treats eczema, dermatitis, insect bites, and mild allergic reactions. It is safe for short-term use.
Comes as: Cream or ointment
How to take it
- Apply a thin layer to affected areas once or twice daily.
- Use the weakest strength that works.
- Do not use for more than 1 week on the face.
- Do not use for more than 2 weeks on the body without advice.
Doses here are typical. Always follow the instructions from your prescriber or on the packet — they come first.
Common side effects
- Burning or stinging on application (usually brief)
- Thinning of skin (with prolonged use)
- Changes in skin colour
The leaflet inside the packet lists all known side effects.
Important safety points
- Do not use on broken skin, infected skin, or acne
- Avoid using on the face for long periods
- Do not use under dressings unless told to
- Do not use more than recommended - more is not better
Get medical help urgently if…
- Your skin becomes infected (hot, red, oozing)
- You have a severe allergic reaction
- Your condition gets worse
- You develop stretch marks or skin thinning
