Methotrexate
Also known as: Metoject, Nordimet
What it's for
Methotrexate treats rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and some cancers. For arthritis and skin conditions, it reduces inflammation by calming your immune system.
Comes as: Tablets or injection
How to take it
- For arthritis/psoriasis: Usually 7.5mg to 25mg ONCE A WEEK (not daily!).
- Take on the same day each week.
- You also need to take folic acid to reduce side effects.
- Your doctor will monitor you with regular blood tests.
Doses here are typical. Always follow the instructions from your prescriber or on the packet — they come first.
Common side effects
- Feeling sick (usually on the day you take it)
- Mouth ulcers
- Feeling tired
- Diarrhoea

Important safety points
- ONLY take this medicine once a week - daily dosing can be fatal
- Avoid alcohol completely or limit strictly
- Avoid pregnancy - use reliable contraception
- Avoid live vaccines while taking methotrexate
- Report any signs of infection immediately
Get medical help urgently if…
- You have a high temperature, sore throat, or signs of infection
- You have unusual bleeding, bruising, or mouth ulcers
- You have severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea
- You have shortness of breath or a dry cough
