Metoclopramide
Also known as: Maxolon
What it's for
Metoclopramide treats nausea and vomiting. It works by speeding up stomach emptying and blocking the vomiting centre in the brain. It is used for migraines and after surgery.
Comes as: Tablets, liquid, or injection
How to take it
- Adults: Usually 10mg up to 3 times daily.
- Take 30 minutes before meals if for digestive problems.
- Maximum 30mg in 24 hours.
- Use for no more than 5 days.
Doses here are typical. Always follow the instructions from your prescriber or on the packet — they come first.
Common side effects
- Drowsiness or tiredness
- Diarrhoea
- Restlessness
- Movement problems (see warnings)

Important safety points
- Only use for up to 5 days - longer use increases side effect risk
- Can cause movement problems (restlessness, muscle spasms)
- May cause drowsiness - take care when driving
- Not suitable for young adults under 20
Get medical help urgently if…
- You have uncontrolled muscle movements or spasms
- You have severe restlessness or agitation
- You have a high temperature with muscle stiffness
- You have difficulty breathing
