Topiramate
Also known as: Topamax
What it's for
Topiramate treats epilepsy and prevents migraines. It calms overactive nerve activity in the brain. It is also sometimes used for weight management.
Comes as: Tablets or capsules
How to take it
- Dose varies - your doctor will increase it slowly.
- For epilepsy: Usually 100mg to 200mg twice daily.
- For migraine prevention: Usually 50mg to 100mg daily.
- Take at the same times each day.
Doses here are typical. Always follow the instructions from your prescriber or on the packet — they come first.
Common side effects
- Tingling in hands or feet
- Weight loss and reduced appetite
- Difficulty concentrating or finding words
- Drowsiness or dizziness
The leaflet inside the packet lists all known side effects.
Important safety points
- MUST NOT be taken during pregnancy - causes birth defects
- Women must use effective contraception
- Drink plenty of water - can cause kidney stones
- Do not stop suddenly without medical advice
Get medical help urgently if…
- You could be pregnant - stop and contact your doctor immediately
- You have eye pain or vision changes
- You have severe stomach pain or pain passing urine (kidney stones)
- You have thoughts of harming yourself
